An entertaining Christmas in Somerset West

December 17, 2010

Preparations for Christmas are now in full swing in the town.  Last week saw the switch on of the Christmas lights along Main Road.  Every year people come from all over the area to see the brilliant display of glimmering lights, bells, angels, reindeer, and lots more.  This year the star attraction was Elvis, who entertained the crowds with a number of his best known songs.

The second Bright Street Charity Carnival was on the same evening.  Entertainment included performances by Akelian Circus, Jessie Jordan and Heldervue bands; a roving belly dancer troupe, fire poi spinners, drummers and many more.  Refreshments included a beer garden, champagne, wine and cocktails, plus gastronomic delights ranging from Greek, Chinese and boere-kos to cupcakes and candyfloss.  Stalls offered a treasure trove for Christmas shoppers with an array of quality goods ranging from antiques to Zulu beading. Proceeds from the carnival went to the Imibala Sponsor a Child organisation.

Another popular Christmas tradition that has been held annually for the past 20 years “Candles by Candelight” at Vergelegen Estate.  Visitors are invited to bring a picnic basket, blanket and torch and celebrate the joy of Christmas with family and friends on the sprawling lawns of this magnificent wine farm.

Regular entertainment is provided during the summer at the Helderberg Nature Reserve where visitors are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy the late afternoon sunset concerts.   Ranging from country to pop, rock, blues and jazz, there is something for every mood and age.

Meanwhile, here at Penny Lane Lodge we are making preparations to ensure that all our guests have a fabulous time during their stay with us over the festive season.
