Playing around – golf courses in Somerset West

February 18, 2011

If you enjoy a round of golf, Somerset West is a great place for it. We have a number of fantastic courses, all with excellent facilities and located in the most beautiful settings.

All the golf courses in Somerset West are open to the public. From golf beginner to experienced player, the variety of golf facilities ensures an unforgettable golf experience for everyone.

Somerset West Golf Club
The Somerset West Golf Club dates back to 1903, when a piece of railway line drawn by four oxen cleared enough bush and mole-runs to allow for a 9 hole course. Extended to 18 holes in later years, the Somerset West Golf course is set amongst big, beautiful and old trees. This is primarily a parkland course which has been split in three due to a railway line and a road running through it. Although it appears inconvenient it actually adds to the challenge as all three sections have something that challenges the golfer.

Strand Golf Course
The Strand Golf Course near the long sandy beach of Strand is one of the long-established golf clubs in Somerset West.  The club was relocated to its present site in 1994. Many bunkers, streams, dams, and often a stiff coastal wind make the golf course a very interesting golf course to play on. The backdrop of the mountains and the elegant multistory buildings of the beach promenade give the Strand Golf Club its character. The hospitable clubhouse with a sunny terrace invites all golf players to a well deserved ending of a golf day.

Erinvale Golf Club
The course at  Erinvale Golf Club was originally created by South African golfing champion, Gary Player. Little has been done to alter the challenges presented by his design, apart from the introduction of additional landscaping and tree planting. Surrounded by vineyards, Erinvale enjoys majestic backdrops of the Helderberg and Hottentot Hollands mountain ranges and sparkling views of False Bay. The first 9 holes are in the valley of the Lourens River, while the second 9 holes go up the slopes of the Helderberg mountain and back down again.

Helderberg Village Golf Club
This neat, family-friendly 9 hole golf course was built for the residents of Helderberg Village, but golf enthusiasts and visitors are more than welcome.  The course has all the amenities of a typical golf course with a clubhouse, halfway-house and a pro shop. The golf course is known for its well-arranged greens and spectacular views of the Helderberg mountain. The green fees at are very favorable and the golf course is never really crowded.

Vodacom Golf Village
The immaculately manicured driving range at Vodacom Golf Village is a favourite among locals who need to practice their golf swing. Floodlights allow for evening practice and you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat at Kilts pub and restaurant. The driving range has a golf retail outlet and teaching professionals to help you master your golf swing.
