Art in Somerset West

April 13, 2011

The Western Cape Watercolour Group is an established group of artists working in and around Cape Town and the Somerset West area.  Although our name suggests that we are watercolourists, our members also work in a range of media including oils, acrylics and mixed media.

UPDATE!!
Since this blog was written we have changed our name to the Western Cape Artists’ Society and have flung open our doors to artists in all media. It’s been a great success and we have added photographers and sculptors to our group. We also have our own facebook page.

The group meets each month in the Library Hall in Somerset West on a Saturday afternoon.  Our meetings are open to visitors as well as members.  The meetings are educational as well as social, with demonstrations and critique sessions given by skilled artists from the local area as well as further afield.

As the newly-elected chair of the Western Cape Watercolour Group, I’ve been busy with preparations for our “Across the Palette” exhibition which opened last week.

Selection Day

Selection day ran very smoothly.  The standard of work submitted was very good and included the full range of media, giving members the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in oils, acrylics and mixed media, as well as watercolours.  Members of the group brought their paintings to the Library Hall for selection by three judges taken from the local art community: Donna Downie, Jacques Vrey and Avril Gardiner.

Our winners were:

  • Judges’ Choice First Prize – Minnie Gerber
  • Second Prize – Diane White
  • Third Prize – Giorgio Guasco
  • Highly commended: Jeanette Hablutzel, Minnie Gerber and Diane White

The winning artists: Giorgio Guasco, Minnie Gerber, Jeanette Hablutzel, Diane White

The Opening

Members of the public and guests were invited to enjoy drinks and snacks  whilst browsing a diverse selection of members’ artwork at the Circle Centre in Somerset West.  The event was well-supported and included the presentation of the awards.
I was particularly delighted to sell two of my paintings on the night!

The exhibition continues at the Circle Centre until lunchtime on 16 April.
