A busy month for the Western Cape Watercolour Group

May 20, 2011

There’s been a lot going on for the Watercolour Group this month. It’s been hard work, but worth it, as we’re busy with art workshops and events held here in Somerset West.

Life drawing

Earlier this month we were very excited to have secured a model for a life drawing workshop which was held at the Imibala Art Gallery in Bright Street, Somerset West.  Members who attended were delighted to have the opportunity to work with a live model. Some of their comments were:

“It was really fun and we all learned a lot.”

“It was most enjoyable, but nasty to see how inept one is with drawing the body!”

“It’s said to be the best way to teach oneself drawing.”

The workshop was such a success that we’re hoping to arrange further sessions as an on-going feature in future months.

Watercolour demonstration

Next Saturday, we’re all looking forward to one of our members, Stephen Quirke, giving a demonstration of his technique.  Demonstrations by “home-grown” artists and from artists from further afield are a regular feature at our monthly meetings, which are held at the Library Hall in Somerset West.

In particular, we were delighted to have renowned watercolourist Bill McGill come to one of our meets earlier in the year.  Bill is famous for his landscapes and wildlife paintings and we were certainly not disappointed either by the quality and entertainment value of his demonstration.

Visit to Somerset West by Hazel Soan

To round off the month, British artist Hazel Soan will be taking time during one of her regular visits to South African, to lead a workshop for members of our group. Hazel is known to millions from for her role as an Art Expert on BBC TV’s popular daytime programme, Watercolour Challenge, and her two series of Splash of Colour. She is also the author of several highly-regarded books on watercolour.

So, inspired by all this creative input, we can spend some time during our cooler winter days settling down to work on our technique and producing some great new paintings.  And we’re all still hoping for some good sales at the watercolour exhibition at Kirstenbosch Gardens.
