The 2011 Helderberg Wine Festival

September 9, 2011

The fourth annual Helderberg Wine Festival is just six weeks away. Running from Thursday, 20 October to Sunday, 23 October, this family-orientated wine and food festival introduces locals and tourists to the glories of the wine produced in the Helderberg area.

This year there are nearly 40 wineries participating in the festival, most of which are located along the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Festival-goers are guaranteed a range of activities at each cellar for young and old.

Great food, live music, kiddies’ programmes, exhibitions, shows and award-winning wines draw the crowds to this laid-back event, which takes place at the different wineries over the four day period.

There are a few key events including:

Saturday, 23 OctoberMountain Bike (MTB) Fun Ride at Lourensford.

Lourensford has become synonymous with this action-driven sport and the Helderberg Festival is no exception. Go as fast as you can for a thrilling adrenalin-fuelled ride, or take it slower and enjoy the scenery.

Choose the 10km or 30km option when booking, depending on your fitness level.

Afterwards, whilst waiting for the prize giving ceremony, relax on the lawns with friends and family and watch the kids play on the various kiddies’ entertainment options provided or enjoy what the Lourensford Food & Wine Market has to offer.

Sunday, 25 October – The Foot of the Helderberg Big Walk at Eikendal

Hundred’s of walkers of all ages and fitness levels will congregate at Eikendal in the morning to enjoy the spectacular scenery of this region.

Both 5km and 10km routes are through beautiful private vineyards at the foot of the Helderberg. The 5km route is easy, mainly aimed at kids and families, whereas the 10km route is for the more energetic – it is tough but manageable. Spectacular views over False Bay will make the sweat all worth it. There are water points along the route, which includes wine tasting.

So why not come down to Somerset West, stay with us at Penny Lane Lodge, and enjoy the delights of the Helderberg Wine Festival. It’s going to be a real treat!
