The Carnival is coming to Somerset West

November 18, 2011

Once again just up the road from my gallery and guest house the local business community in Bright Street are organising an evening street carnival on Friday 2 December for the purpose of raising money for the Imibala Children’s Charity.

Last year the carnival committee raised almost R30000 which was used by Imibala to sponsor 42 underprivileged children to attend primary school for a year. The sponsorship also provides each child with a school tracksuit, school shoes, t-shirt, socks and underwear, a book bag and stationery. Of course, education for these children, who would otherwise not be able to attend school, is very important as it gives them a better chance for the future to enter the workforce and earn a living.

This year’s theme is ‘Countries of the World’ with shopping, themed bars and a food court, together with a host of on street performers to entertain young and old alike.  Entertainment includes special guest, international saxophonist Andrew Young, together with the local bands: Mister and Misread, The Akelian Circus, Heather Waters and Jesse Jordan. In addition, there will be fire performers, drummers, children’s entertainers, dancers from around the world and even a rodeo bull!

Food and beverage stalls will be offering gastronomic delights from the four corners of the globe as well as many local delicacies, plus a German beer garden, wine and cocktails. Market stalls along the street will provide a treasure trove for Christmas shoppers.

This year the committee tells us that they are hoping to double the profit on last year and so double the number of kids supported through their primary education.  We say good luck to them!

It’s going to be a great evening, just as it was last year. If you’re in the area, I’d recommend you pop along.
