Say cheese!

April 20, 2012

The annual South African Cheese Festival will be held over the coming holiday weekend on 27-30 April 2012 at Sandringham Estate in Stellenbosch (on the N1 halfway between Cape Town and Paarl). It’s a great day out for all the family and less than half an hour’s drive from us here at Penny Lane Lodge.

You can spend the whole day sampling the legendary variety of tasty products, learning from local culinary talent or simply relaxing with a glass or wine and plate of cheese in the stunning country setting.

Visitors to this year’s event will be able to experience the products of several artisan cheese makers including Langbaken Cheese, Buffeljagsrivier Primary, Karoo Milk Goat Products, Pépé Charlot, Jireh Foods, Kleinfontein Cheese, Desiree Kingwill Cheese and Mestervik Cheese.

Also on offer is a mouth-watering mix of handmade produce such as olives, wines, preserves and tapenades, sweet delights and artisan breads and pastries.

There will be plenty to entertain the kids in the safe and supervised Wilde Fruit Juice Kiddies Corner, including a big chair jumping castle and life-size TV characters.  Better still is the Agriculture Milk Factory…every kid (and adult) should know where milk comes from, and maybe even give milking a try to see how hard it can be!

A host of well-known chefs, food bloggers and cheese makers will demonstrate the versatility of cheese during numerous interactive cooking demos. Rub shoulders with the likes of food editors Barbara Joubert (Sarie Kos), Herman Lensing (Sarie), Carmen Niehaus (You) and Waldimar Pelser (NewsNow) and celebrated chefs Craig Cormack and Giorgio Nava.

The entrance fee includes a shopping bag, festival programme, scrumptious tastings and demonstrations by famous South African food personalities. Wine tasting glasses are available at the gates.

Tickets are available from Computicket or any Checkers store (no tickets will be available at the gates) pricwed at R110. Senior citizens pay R90 and children 13 years and younger enter absolutely free. The festival runs from 10:00 to 18:00 each day and 17:00 on the last day.
