A long holiday weekend

April 27, 2012

Today sees the start of a long holiday weekend with two public holidays coming up either side of the weekend. Freedom Day is celebrated on 27 April. This was the day in 1994 when the first democratic election was held in South Africa, when all adult citizens could vote irrespective of race or colour.  It was also the day in 1997 when the new South African constitution took effect.

Workers’ Day has been celebrated on 1 May of each year since 1994. In pre-1994 South Africa, the demand for the annual observance of the day as a public holiday became a rallying point for workers and their trade unions and was one of a number of annually significant days to symbolise and mobilise resistance to the Apartheid government and its racial policies. Many countries recognise the May Day holiday of course. Given the role that trade unions played in the fight for freedom, it is unsurprising that South Africa commemorates this day too.

As 1 May falls on Tuesday, many people and businesses take Monday as a holiday as well – people will enjoy getting together with friends and family having a braai or going to one of our wonderful local beaches. Picnics in Helderberg Nature Reserve are also very popular, as are trips to the local wine farms – particularly with our visitors.

But not if you are in the hospitality industry like we are at Penny Lane Lodge.  Still, we don’t mind. We make sure that we have a little relaxation too, and according to our favourite weather forecast, it looks like it’s going to be a fine on Sunday for enjoying our garden with a glass of wine and some delicious food cooked on our braai.

Enjoy your weekend, wherever you are!
