‘Across the Palette’ Exhibition by the Western Cape Watercolour Group

May 11, 2012

Selection day for the Western Cape Watercolour Group’s annual Across the Palette exhibition took place on the morning of Saturday 21 April.  18 of our artists put in a total of 49 paintings, of which 42 were selected by our three eminent judges: Derric van Rensburg, Di Ackerman and Lara Faasen.

First Prize, “Judge’s Choice‟, went to Charmé Southey for her painting “Waiting for…”

Second prize went to Marion Langton for “Hernando’s Hideaway”

I was pleased to share a joint third prize for my painting, “Simon’s Town”:

The other third prize winner was Bonnie Price for “Cock of the Walk”.

The judges also awarded five Highly Commended prizes: one to our first prize winner, Charmé Southey, two to Minnie Gerber, two to me.  It was very satisfying to have all three of my paintings recognised.

It had been touch and go whether not we would have approval to exhibit at our usual venue, the Circle Centre in Somerset West.  So when we received the go-ahead from the new landlords just a week before the opening was planned we breathed a huge sigh of relief.  It was a shame we had to wait so long, as it meant we were unable to publicise the event quite as we would have liked.  However, the opening did go well, even if fewer people than usual attended, and the exhibition itself does look good.

Here are the winning artists at the opening – from the Left: Charme Southey, Marion Norton, Diane White (me!) and Bonnie Price.

We did have one sale on the evening: Neve Stewart sold her pretty little boat painting to good friends of mine, Sigrid and Nick.

The exhibition at the Circle Centre runs until Wednesday 16 May.  We have all our fingers and toes crossed hoping for a few more sales.
