Alvaro Castagnet – the painter with a passion

August 24, 2012

Wow…what an awesome artist!

A group of us from the Western Cape Watercolour Group spent a spellbound 90 minutes watching this man demonstrate his wonderful watercolour technique in his DVD: “The Passionate Painter in Antwerp”.

Alvaro Castagnet is a high respected watercolour artist with an international reputation. His paintings capture the essence of his subjects with passion, boldness and elegence. In the film we watched he travels to Antwerp and selects a range of subjects including street views, a café interior, inside the railways station and one of the oldest bars in Antwerp painted at night. They were all amazing!

Alvaro was born in Montevideo in Uruguay and migrated to Australia in 1983. He has won numerous painting awards, travels extensively, is a member of several art societies and was elected a member of the American Watercolour Society in 2007. He is also a successful author, holds highly popular workshops and his works are collected worldwide.

I’m not surprised at his success.  His film was truly fascinating and utterly inspiring, and I was straight back in my gallery painting up a storm this week.

He has never been to South Africa as far as I can tell, so I’ve dropped him and email, asking him to consider a visit. I know people would come in droves if he were to honour us with running a workshop here in Somerset West. And of course, Kevin and I would be delighted to look after him during his stay at our guest house, Penny Lane Lodge.
