The Western Cape Watercolour Group plays “pass the painting”

November 30, 2012

We had a bit of fun at our last art group meeting of 2012 last Saturday.  Rather than invite someone to do a demonstration or bring our paintings for a crit session, we decided to have a light-hearted, practical painting session, to involve members and visitors alike all painting together.

We set up four large tables in our usual meeting place, the Library Hall in central Somerset West. We provided the paper and water pots and our artists were asked to bring paints and pastels of their choice to work with.  We explained that we were going to play “pass the painting” – a bit like pass the parcel, but different.

Here is how to play:

Each person starts with a piece of watercolour paper and a photograph in front of them, then with the accompaniment of some suitably festive and jolly music, everyone starts to paint. When the music stops, at the end of each 3 – 4 minute track, everyone passes the painting and photo on to the person on the left who carries on with the painting. And so on.

After about 40 minutes everyone on their table had had two or three ‘goes’ at the painting. It was enough, or we would start to overwork them. So we quickly finished off the painting we were on and proceeded to our festive drinks and snacks.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it was good to talk and share in the activity. And some of the paintings actually weren’t bad at all.

But now we are looking forward to something more serious – our Annual Merit and Little Gems exhibition at the Circle Centre, here in Somerset West.  The opening is at 17h00 on Monday 10 December and our good friend Leo van Straten from the Imibala Art Centre will be giving the opening speech. It should be a good evening.

The exhibition runs until Tuesday 18 December during the Circle Centre’s normal opening times. Fingers crossed for some fantastic sales!
