The Hermanus Whale Festival 2013

September 20, 2013

whale logoThis is the Hermanus Whale Festival’s 22nd year, where whale watching, good music and sporting action meet in a family-focused extravaganza.  The festival begins today, Friday 20th September and runs over the whole of this weekend and into next.

The small seaside town of Hermanus has the best land-based whale watching on the world.  Drive into the car park by the main entertainment and shopping area and you will see the Southern Right Whales doing their stuff in the bay, right before your eyes!

The Whale Festival is aimed at the whole family and offers stunning sightseeing opportunities, education and entertainment with these massive mammals as the star of the show.

Meanwhile on land, visitors will also be captivated by great entertainment and fun activities including fabulous food, eye-catching local arts and crafts and children’s activities.  There is even a Craft Beer Project which aims to educate customers about the brewing industry.

The Two Oceans Wine and Food Marquee hosts 30 local artists performing for free over the week-long festival.  The Marine Endangered Species Expo Marquee offers visitors the chance to learn all about the whales and other threatened species.

And there is Hermanus Adventure week to challenge the sporty element.  On Sunday there is the Hermanus Open Water Swim; on Monday the Hermanus Festival Night Run and on Monday the Hermanus Whale Festival Bike Classic.  Finally on Saturday 28th September there is the Festival Trail run.

Definitely something for everybody…but the whales come top for me!
