Cape Town World Design Capital 2014

December 23, 2013

WDC images2The World Design Capital is designated biennially by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. The award gives the city an opportunity to use design for social, cultural and economic development.

Nestled between two national heritage sites: Robben Island and the majestic Table Mountain range, the city is three times the size of New York and home to around 3.6 million people. As South Africa’s oldest city and having recently hosted the first World Cup on African soil, Cape Town now has first class infrastructure and a cosmopolitan lifestyle. With the highest standard of living of all South African cities, this gateway to the African continent is rich in heritage, innovation, diversity and creative talent.

During 2014 Cape Town will play host to a number of World Design Capital Signature Events, including an International Design House Exhibition, International Design Policy Conference and an International Design Gala.

The themes for WDC 2014 are:

African Innovation. Global Conversation
African ideas that speak to the world

Bridging the Divide
Design that reconnects our city and reconciles our communities

Today for Tomorrow
Sustainable solutions for people and planet

Beautiful spaces. Beautiful things
Inspiring architecture, interiors, food, fashion, jewellery, craft, art and creativity

You can read more about these themes on the WDC website.

This is great news for tourism in and around Cape Town, not just in terms of a boost in visitor numbers, but also because there will be many opportunities for our creative communities to get involved as exhibitors, speakers, delegates, partners and suppliers. Plus, there will be a wealth of inspiring projects for locals as well as visitors to experience. We will certainly be keeping an eye out for events which will be of particular interest to our guests here at Penny Lane Lodge. After all, we are just 30 minutes drive to the ‘Mother City’.
