The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2014

March 3, 2014

tour logoThe 37th annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, which takes place on 9 March 2014, is one of the biggest events on the South African cycling calendar. This year about 35 000 cyclists from around the world will be participating in this iconic event; of these, more than 5 500 are first-time Cycle Tour riders.

The Cycle Tour has transformed over the years from a race into a pilgrimage undertaken by South African and foreign visitors with an interest in the outdoors and leading a healthy lifestyle. Since its humble beginnings in 1978 when just a few hundred cyclists participated, it is now recognised as the world’s largest individually timed cycle race.

The route starts at the Cape Town Civic Centre. It then travels along the M3 to Muizenberg and on to Main Road to Simon’s Town and Smitswinkel Bay. It then passes the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park, before heading through Scarborough, Kommetjie and Noordhoek. Thereafter it travels along Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay and on to Camps Bay, ending at Cape Town Stadium in Green Point.

Over the years, the race has generated millions of rands for cycling development and charitable projects supported by its two key beneficiaries, the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont. Entry allocation for charitable groups was introduced in 2012. David Bellairs, director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust (CTCTT) that organises the event, has reported great interest from charities wishing to use the 2014 race as an opportunity to fundraise for worthy causes. ‘We are thrilled that cyclists far and wide have embraced the Cycle Tour as a platform to give back to their communities,’ he says.

In a first for the race, the organisers are permitting qualifying cyclists to complete two cycle tours in one day. The CTCTT will be inviting riders fit enough to make it back to the start before the final group departs at around 10am to ride the tour twice. Only cyclists in the top six seeding groups will qualify. Cyclists invited to participate will have both race times recorded.
