Great food and wine…just up the road from Somerset West

June 13, 2014

It’s not often that I go all out to recommend a particular restaurant. However, the Equus Restaurant at the Carvalli Wine and Stud Farm served us a truly exceptional meal last Sunday. The food is stunning and beautifully presented…and not as hugely expensive as you might expect. Carvalli’s own wines are very acceptable and reasonable priced.

The view from the dining room is spectacular.  The setting is also stunning – I can’t imagine what was spent on the planting of the grounds, but like everything else, the visual effect is superb.

As an artist I obviously couldn’t resist a visit to their art gallery which is located underneath the restaurant. What a stunning space…and some interesting pieces in the current exhibition “What Lies Beneath”.

Most definitely worth a visit for both the visual experience and the food and wine. Better still it’s just a 10 minute drive from our guest house, Penny Lane Lodge in Somerset West. You can’t miss Cavalli – it’s on the R44 on the way up to Stellenbosch.  Look out for the beautiful bronze horse at the gate. And they have a fine stud farm there as well.
