Learning to paint

August 8, 2014

Lucus and Di

Whilst I was Chair of the Western Cape Artists’ Society we committed ourselves to sponsoring one of the learners who attends the art classes which are run in the Donna Downie Art Centre as part of the Imibala Trust’s sponsorship activities. This is the second year we have been sponsoring Lucus Voloshiya through the Imibala Trust’s sponsor-a-child programme and last week I arranged to catch up with him to see how he is getting on.

First we looked at what the ‘senior boys’ art class was up to. Here Lucus and the other learners were busy with lino cuts, instructed by some keen volunteers from Somerset College, These young women give up their time after classes on a Friday to assist in the Art Centre – and very talented and knowledgeable are they!

Lucus and I then went across to the Imibala Gallery where are WCAS exhibition is running.  Lucus was pleased to meet artist, Jaques Very and was keen to examine his work. We took a tour around the other paintings and Lucus made some very insightful comments about the art on display, demonstrating a impressive level of knowledge about painting and the use of art materials. Lucus is a young man who deserves to go far!
