Wine Farms around Somerset West open on Sundays

December 5, 2014

The Cape Winelands vineyards grow some of the finest grapes in the world and what better place to spend your Sunday than one of our wonderful local wine farms. Our guests at Penny Lane Lodge often ask us for recommendations: here are some of our current favourites.

Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch

Set in lovely surroundings you’ll find lots to do at Spier. With picnics, farm-to-table eating opportunities, barrel tastings and a child-friendly eagle encounters experience. Wine tastings (9am until 5pm) are offered in the formal indoor lounge and courtyard, with chocolate and wine pairings and barrel samplings where you can taste straight from the barrel.

The setting is stunning with a large central lake surrounded weeping willows and soft-sloped grass, which attract a huge variety of birdlife, making at an enchanting picnic spot. Make your own lunch from produce at the Eight To Go deli or pre-order a themed basket. For more formal meal, Eight Restaurant uses the finest fresh ingredients.

Pick a souvenir from the craft market where local artists have their beautiful contemporary and traditional arts and crafts on sale. Visit the art gallery to view one of South Africa’s largest collections of contemporary art.

Recently introduced are the Segway Tours – “glide through the vineyards on your own Segway Personal Transporter.” We haven’t tried, but it looks great fun!

Spier is located on the R310 Baden Powell Drive. From Somerset West, take the R44 towards Stellenbosch, turn left onto Annandale Road and then right onto the R310. The entrance is just up the road on the right.

Avontuur Estate, Stellenbosch

Avontuur describes itself as “the home of fine wine and fast horses”. Just 10 minutes’ drive from Penny Lane Lodge, this is one of our favourites for Sunday lunch – and we’d particularly recommend the duck in orange sauce! Views from the pretty restaurant terrace are stunning: your eye is drawn over the paddocks where you will see some of the horses grazing with their foals, and across the vineyards to Table Mountain and False Bay in the distance.

The menu is contemporary country cuisine with South African, French and Thai influences, inspired by the seasons. The Avontuur Estate Restaurant stands for fresh, hearty food with tons of flavour. The menu doesn’t get changed too often, since people enjoy the classics, although daily specials ensure that regulars always have something seasonal to try.

Avontuur wines are available to taste and purchase in the newly refurbished tasting room, which is open daily. The new space, designed by Cape Town interior designer Clair Drier, boasts a classy but laidback atmosphere. Interesting wine pairings are also on offer including biltong, chocolate and nougat combos.

A welcoming and laidback attitude permeates your whole experience from the moment you turn into the estate. The vineyards and horse enclosures are immediately visible and easily accessible for a closer look, the restaurant and tasting room terrace are inviting and the magnificent Helderberg slopes in the background inspire a sense of tranquillity.

The House of J.C. Le Roux in Stellenbosch

The House of J.C. Le Roux is the place for “everything bubbly” offering guests a menu of fun pairings that merge with the estate’s ethos to live “le good life”. With plush red couches, thick glass tables and over-the-top chandeliers, the venue’s opulent two-storey tasting room has over 10 different bubblies to choose from, and they can be sampled with everything from marshmallows and meringue to nougat and Turkish delight.

The restaurant, Le Venue, has a menu designed to complement J C Le Roux’s range of sparkling wine. Oysters are the perfect foil, but canapés, gourmet burgers and a host of desserts (like decadent white chocolate cheesecake} are also on the menu.

Good food, sparkling wine and fantastic views across Devon Valley – the perfect place to chill out on a Sunday afternoon!
